The Healthcare Council & ShareSource seeks a visionary nonprofit business leader skilled in driving organizational success and empowering high performing staff. Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the President/CEO will be based at the organization’s offices in Calverton, Maryland and have overall management responsibility for a growing impactful organization with a million and half annual budget and ten employees.
Combining inspirational leadership and sophisticated management abilities, they will advance the organization in terms of culture, capability, processes, and impact. While working closely with the organization’s leadership team, the CEO will inspire innovation and ensure that the organization is continually well equipped to advance its mission.
Founded in 1946 The Healthcare Council is a 501 (c) 3 membership organization dedicated to helping members reduce costs, encouraging co- operative working relationships and promoting quality healthcare across the Mid-Atlantic and beyond. The Healthcare Council is also parent company, to ShareSource, a wholly owned Group Purchasing Organization (GPO) subsidiary providing best in class contracts at the local, regional and national levels to save members time and resources.
The President/CEO will manage the day-to-day operations of the organization: implementing administrative functions, operating within the approved budget, managing all human resources matters, and executing the goals of the strategic plan. They will also focus on governance, including but not limited to leading the development of the strategic plan, leading the board of directors in their mission, defining committee goals, and building a diversified board. They will advance the mission and image of the organization by serving as the chief representative to internal and external stakeholders, board, staff, donors, nonprofits, and media. They will also build relationships with provider CEOs and their executive teams, government, and the general public.
HCC & SS seeks a forward-thinking leader with experience developing and promoting programs for the changing landscape of healthcare. The successful candidate will be knowledgeable about the challenges facing healthcare and ideally have experience working in a complex health care institution. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills are required, as is a record of accomplishment in building trust and lasting relationships, both
internal and external. This individual will be expected to understand and advance the organization’s mission and have a record of commitment to enhancing engagement and success. The ideal candidate should also understand healthcare organizations and their governance structure including department leaders in the decision-making process and should be a collaborative and present leader willing to engage with the community, the Conference of Metropolitan & Regional Hospital Associations (CMHA), the American Hospital Association (AHA), Premier, Inc., Yankee Alliance, other associations, and vendors. A demonstrated and continuing commitment to diversity, access, equity, and inclusion will be critical to the incoming President/CEOs success.
An earned terminal degree and academic credentials that merit appointment as a healthcare leader is a must. A proven record of broad, progressive, and substantive administrative leadership at the level of vice-president, senior director, or similar position is desired.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Executive Leadership and Organizational Management
- Provide thoughtful and visionary executive leadership that is inclusive, transparent, and empowering in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission as defined by the Board of Trustees
- Present strategic options and plans for organization impact and gain Board approval as needed to conduct the work of the mission of the organization.
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Council, and its subsidiary, ShareSource, and employees and ensure its overall successful long-term operations.
- Maintain appropriate compliance in the Council’s business affairs with its landlord, taxing authorities, governmental agencies, vendors, and partners.
- Organize, motivate, and mentor internal team leaders to strategically grow the organization’s impact, educational programs, sponsorships, fund raising, and to effectively fulfill its important mission.
- Apply innovative thinking and performance measurements to analyze and support strategic decision-making.
- Continually foster a culture that encourages collaboration between providers and recognizes positive contributions.
- Contribute to the strategic plan and drive its implementation.
- Manage and motivate staff, overseeing processes such as hiring, separation, ongoing staff development, performance management, and compensation and benefits.
- Inspire a business-oriented, professional, results-driven environment across the organization.
- Perform general management duties overseeing the day-to-day operations of the organization.
- Establish goals, objectives, and operational plans in collaboration with the Board of Directors, staff, and other leaders.
Board Governance
- Maintain regular and ongoing communication to build strong relationships with the entire Board, providing leadership and support to members at all times.
- Communicate effectively with the Board by providing members with all information necessary to continually function properly and make informed decisions in a timely and accurate manner.
- Maintain regular communications with the Council’s Executive Committee and its Board Chair.
- Record minutes of all board meetings and committees and provide reports and updates on staff as well as all current work, project timelines, and project and organizational progress.
- Gracefully manage the board as needed to build consensus, remind them of outstanding deliverables, and offer support.
- Implement Board policies and procedures and build support for Board decisions amongst staff.
- Work closely and openly with the Board and its committees, ensuring ongoing communication of risks and issues, as well as successes.
- Maintain all appropriate books and records, as well as assuring compliance with the Council’s budget.
- Recruiting additional qualified members of the board, and strengthening the quality of its leadership and functions
Development and Fundraising
- Drive development and fundraising and leveraging the Board as needed.
- Initiate, cultivate, and extend relationships with the organization’s portfolio of individual, foundation, and corporate supporters.
- Ensure the organization’s financial stability and sustainability by maintaining healthy cash flow and adequate reserves.
- Sustaining and growing the membership of the Council and assuring prompt payment of all dues.
- Organizing, planning, coordinating, and helping to present timely and relevant educational programs for healthcare executives, department leaders and trustees.
- Growing the various Divisions of the Council.
- Coordinating the research for and the publication of the Council’s wage, salary, and benefits survey and its hot jobs survey.
- In collaboration with Premier, Yankee Alliance and Endorsed partners, helping to grow the group purchasing business of ShareSource and otherwise expanding the relationship with all groups.
- Maintaining liaison relationships with industry associations, such as the American Hospital Association and the Conference of Metropolitan & Regional Hospital Associations.
Financial Management and Administration
- Provide strategic leadership and hands-on management for all of the administrative and operational functions of the organization in accordance with the mission, objectives, and policies.
- Prudently direct resources and manage all financials within budget guidelines and according to current laws and regulations.
- Assume responsibility for the fiscal integrity of the organization.
- Monitor board-approved budget and manage daily financial operations to ensure maximum utilization of resources and optimum financial positioning for the organization.
- Ensure maximum resource utilization, budget management, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position.
- Build and administer the annual budget, with Board approval.
External Relations and Communications
- Represent the organization and serve as chief spokesperson publicly at events, conferences, and partnership meetings.
- Present and promote the organization and its mission, programs, partners, and members in a consistently positive manner.
- Ensure high visibility to prospects and the public and build interest in supporting the organization through sponsorships and donations.
- Manage all aspects of the organization’s marketing and public relations.
Working Conditions
- Location: On-site or hybrid, depending on the company’s situation.
- Travel Requirements: Expected travel for business meetings, conferences, etc., if applicable.
- Work Hours: Flexibility based on the demands of the business.
Qualifications:
Candidates may emerge from nonprofit, foundation, government, or industry backgrounds and should possess the following:
- Five years of prior experience as Executive Director, or in a related position at a nonprofit, foundation, government, or industry
- Strong business acumen and a history of providing visionary leadership at the executive level.
- Proven experience executing organization growth and leading a similar or larger size successful nonprofit and/or related entity.
- Proven experience working with and leading a nonprofit Board and working with diverse groups of people.
- Familiarity with diverse business functions such as Marketing, Public Relations, Human Resources, Finance, etc.
- Experience and success in motivating, recruiting, developing, retaining, and mentoring high performance, mission-driven, and results-oriented teams.
- Excellent written, oral, and public speaking skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with strong interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.
- A bachelor’s or advanced degree
